One of the most beautiful day trips in the Yucatan is to Mani and Chacmultun.
Mani is located right off the highway heading to Bacalar about 100 kilometers southeast of Merida. Mani is mainly known is well for the old Franciscan monastery established in 1549, the Parroquia y Exconvento de San Miguel Arcangel. The monastery was built using cut stones from many of the Pre-Columbian structures that once made up Mani. Mani is on the way to Chacmultun so it is well worth the stop. On the back side of the convent you will find a fantastic cochinita being sold right on the street.
Chacmultun is another 30 minutes south tucked in the hill of southern Yucatan. This is a beautiful drive into the remote location. It can be tricky to find so be sure you have Google maps guiding you.
Chacmultun is a small site, but do not miss out on hiking to the top of the nearby hill where you will find a temple standing alone with an amazing view of the valley.
